The following steel-engravings were published in a set of at least 6 under the title "New Views of Margate" by J. T. Wood of 278 and 279 Strand, London. A history of J. T. Wood is available. It seems that "279 Strand" only appeared on his prints after 1867, but that after 1871 "280 Strand" also appeared, dating these prints to between 1867 and 1871.

Church after bomb damage

Isle of Thanet Gazette, June 1943: Holy Trinity Church Bombed:Mission Hall Demolished

In a recent  attack by sneak raiders, Holy Trinity Church, Margate, which has stood for over a hundred years, was shattered by a bomb which passed through an unoccupied house on the sea front before exploding near the chancel.

Another bomb completely demolished  the Peniel Mission Hall, Thanet-road, and during the raid damage was caused to Cliftonville Methodist Church.

The full extent of the damage to Holy Trinity Church cannot yet be ascertained. The roof was, it is believed, lifted by the explosion before crashing about seventy feet into the centre aisle. Part of the north wall was demolished, together with the gallery on that side, but the south wall and apse appear sound, although the mullions of the windows are out. The tower at the west end appears sound, except for a few superficial cracks.

The beautiful stained glass east window, which was fitted in 1887 at a cost of about £600, was blown to pieces. The window, in twelve panels, represented the dawn of Christianity, the four centre lights in the lower half portraying the Nativity; and the four above the Resurrection.

The reredos beneath the east window has been damaged, but it is thought that the parish war memorial, the Roberts memorial and the font have more or less escaped damage.

The building of the church was commenced in 1825 and completed in June, 1829, at a cost of between £25,000 and £28,000. In 1903 the church was enlarged and improved at a cost of about £18,000, to which Mr. Alfred Roberts contributed £11,000. It was thought that Trinity House Brethren contributed to the cost of the building of the church, or at least the    tower, but according to a history of the church, written by Mr. H. M. Walton in 1932, there is no evidence to support this and there has been no connection between Trinity House and Holy Trinity Church. The name of the church was apparently chosen by the then Archbishop of Canterbury.  Margate Pier and Harbour Company, however, contributed  £2,000 under an Act of Parliament which enacted that it should only be given if the Church Committee agreed to build a tower at least 120ft. from the ground according to a plan approved by Trinity House. The tower is actually 135ft. high.

Service in Trinity Church June 1946

Isle of Thanet Gazette, June 1946: Service in Bombed Church

Despite driving wind and rain, about 150 people gathered under the bomb-scarred south gallery of Holy Trinity Church, Margate, on Sunday evening, when a special service was held in celebration of Trinity Sunday. The Rev. F. Mellows (Vicar of St. Paul's) officiated, supported by two former curates of Holy Trinity Parish, the Rev. A. Lawler (now Vicar of Teynham) and the Rev. A. Edwards (an Army Chaplain).

Holy Trinity Church was heavily damaged on June 1st, 1943, when 12 F.W.190's carried out a sharp attack on Margate. A bomb exploded near the altar and organ after passing through the upper storey of a boarding house. The stained glass east window was shattered against houses on the opposite side of the road. Since that date church services have been held at St. Paul's Church.

A Symbolic Service

Throughout the service the congregation stood huddled under umbrellas to protect them from the rain. Originally it was intended to hold the service in the church grounds, but weather conditions made this arrangement impossible.

The aim of Holy Trinity Parochial Church Council is to rebuild the church on its present site, and authority is now awaited from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners before reconstruction plans are prepared.

A portable altar was erected in the south gallery, and decorated with red, white and blue flowers. The service opened with the singing of "Now thank we all our God," with music played by the Margate Salvation Army Band.

In his address, the Rev. A. Lawler said the service was symbolic, as it showed that a church building could be destroyed but not the church of God.

Referring to the possibility of rebuilding the church on its present site, the Rev. F. Mellows said that at present the future was unknown, but every effort was being made to ensure that reconstruction was commenced at the earliest possible date.

The churchwardens (Messrs. J. S. Brown and F. W. Doughty) are awaiting instructions from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners so that they can draw up plans for the church's reconstruction on, it is hoped, its present site.

Isle of Thanet Gazette, 6 June 1947: Service in the Ruins: Anniversary of Air Raid

On June 1st, 1943, Holy Trinity Church, Margate, was partially destroyed when 12 enemy aircraft carried out a daylight attack on the town.

On Sunday — exactly four years later — over 300 people gathered in the bomb-scarred ruins for a special service held in celebration of Trinity Sunday.

The service was conducted by the Rev. W. A. Roberts, a missionary on leave from   Honolulu,  and former Sunday  School teacher at Holy Trinity, and an  address  was given by  the  Rev. A.  Lawler, a former curate of the parish, who is now vicar of Teynham. The blessing was given by the Rev. N. I. Powell, curate of St. Paul's Church. The hymn-singing   was led by the Margate Salvation Army Band, supported by the Songster Brigade.

In a brief address, the Rev. A. Lawler deplored the loss of so splendid a church —splendid in its succession of earnest vicars and enthusiastic congregations. But severe as was the loss of the “church made with hands” God was vitally concerned with the real Holy Trinity Church — the congregation of its worshippers, now scattered and absorbed into other  churches.

Concluding. Mr. Lawler said he was sure that if a new edifice was built on the site of the wrecked church, the old tradition for evangelism and spiritual zeal would again constitute the ideals of the new Holy Trinity.

In a few words, the Rev. W. A. Roberts recalled the history of the church since its foundations were laid in 1825. He asked everyone to work together, saying it would be for the benefit of Margate for the church to be rebuilt.

Temporary home for Church, 1955

Trinity temporary church June 1955 | Margate History

A view of the interior of the temporary Holy Trinity Church, Margate, on the upper floor of the Parish Hall in Hawley Street, which was dedicated by the Bishop of Dover (the Right Rev. Canon A. C. W. Rose) on Saturday.

Isle of Thanet Gazette, 10 June 1955: Holy Trinity has church after 12 years

ONCE again, after a period of more than 12 years, the life of Holy Trinity parish, Margate, is centred in its own place of worship. On Saturday the Bishop of Dover (the Rt. Rev. A. C. W. Rose) dedicated a temporary church in Hawley Street in a simple, but significant service.

For the temporary church, the upper floor of Holy Trinity Parish Hall has been altered, redecorated, fitted and furnished, and the result is a beautiful little church for the parish. One of the pleasingly surprising features is the "east" end window of mixed cathedral glass, with shields bearing the sacred monogram and the diocesan arms of Canterbury. The fittings of the church include much that was salvaged from the bomb-damaged church in Trinity Square, including pews for the choir stalls and oak for the pulpit.

Anglican and Free Church clergy, together with the Mayor (Alderman C. S. F. Witts, J .P., C.C.), attended the service, and the church was packed.

Earlier in the day there had been a service of reunion for the former Queen's School of Margate (principal, Mrs. Walton), during which the old girls presented a fontlet with table for use in the church. Despite the rail strike, which prevented many from travelling, the service was well attended by former scholars.

On Sunday (Trinity Sunday), worship began in the temporary church, which was well filled. Mr. W. Horsford, choirmaster of Margate Parish Church, helped with the music.

Open-air service

In the afternoon, an open-air festival service was held in the grounds of Holy Trinity Church, attended by youth organizations, headed by the 438 (Thanet) Air Training Corps band, and by a large congregation. The preacher was the Rev. F. H. Crook, priest-in-charge of Holy Trinity, and the Salvation Army Band led the singing. In the evening, in the temporary church, the Archdeacon of Canterbury (the Venerable A. Sargent) preached, taking as his text, Luke xxii, 12, " A large upper room, furnished, there make ready ..."

The War Memorial 1922

The War Memorial at Trinity Church was unveiled by Lord Harris on Sunday, 5 November 1922. Information about the War Memorial is available on the Margate Civic Society site.
